2021: A time to reflect about goal setting

As a new year brings a fresh chapter for us to write, it’s a good time to reflect about past wins and missteps and how those can shape your goals for your small business in 2021.

One thing is certain, an unprecedented amount of uncertainty has overwhelmed small businesses in our neighborhoods, states and nation. Many small business owners will have to, unfortunately, shut down this year because of falling profits punctuated by the pandemic.

For those who were not able to pivot last year in face of the coronavirus, remember what motivated you initially? Dig deep on this one. What lights your fire? Or, in the words of Simon Sinek, author and motivational speak, what is your why?

Passion. It’s underestimated. And how you turn passion into profit is anyone’s unique journey. But with every failure, and going out of business because of a pandemic, remember you can overcome this and rebuild or pivot.

Resiliency, creativity, and strategic planning will benefit small business owners in 2021 and beyond. Tough times call for creative solutions. Staying sane in the process takes resiliency, and the strength to get back up after a setback. Strategic planning will help you stay organized and grow your business by maximizing small steps toward a larger goal.

Small wins. Don’t forget to celebrate them. Make a list of all the goals you want to accomplish both big and small. Arrange the list that makes sense to what you do, and turn it into a roadmap for your goal setting. Review it and revise accordingly. The fun part is when you accomplish a goal and can check it off your list.

Keep it up. Remember, 2021 is a fresh start and chance to rediscover what matters the most in life and business. Celebrate the highs, learn from the lows, and never give up.
